Blogs and Websites Offer Support & Tips for Combating Obesity
Kyle Shea, born with Spina Bifida in Nova Scotia, began Fitness Without Legs (FWL) as a simple Health and Fitness blog aimed at helping to promote a healthier lifestyle for everyday people. His hope was to show people that someone who has a spinal cord defect and is confined to a wheelchair can lead a fit and healthy lifestyle. His blog serves as motivation for others to take their health to the next level - after all, the biggest obstacle between where we are and where we want to be is motivation. After an extended hospital stay following an infection, Kyle made a promise to himself to put his health first in his life. He began by changing his diet to healthier choices and then incorporating exercise. Receiving his physical training certification and starting his blog became the next stepson his journey to sharing his newfound passion.
About 50% of adults with Spina Bifida are classified as having a body mass index in the obese category. Obesity is a serious health concern that limits mobility, raises the risk for additional health problems such as heart attack and stroke risk, and can increase a person’s risk for type II diabetes. Health and fitness blogs like Kyle’s, and groups like the National Council on Physical Activity for People with Disabilities (NCPAD) can offer ideas and strategies to maintain a healthy weight. |
